Texas sheriff says boater shot, believed dead

A Texas sheriff has asked Mexico to help find the body of an American who was shot in the head in Mexican waters in an ambush by armed boaters.

Zapata County Sheriff Sigifredo Gonzalez says it's believed that 30-year-old David Michael Hartley died. Search efforts that ended around 9 p.m. Thursday were to resume Friday.

Gonzalez says Hartly and his wife, Tiffany, were riding personal watercrafts Thursday back from Mexico on Falcon Lake when about six gunmen approached in two boats. The sheriff said Hartley was shot as the couple sped away. His wife wasn't hurt.

Gonzalez told The Monitor of McAllen that the boats followed the woman past the U.S. boundary and the pirates "acted very boldly."

The sheriff says the Hartleys had moved to McAllen about five months ago from Reynosa, Mexico.
