As expected, Rockwall’s Oar House, within view of Lake Ray Hubbard, offers some interesting seafood dishes, like a pile of tiny crab legs in a creamy lemon garlic sauce, but it specializes in fancy Italian-themed food. We liked the tender Agnello Cipolla, a lamb shank baked in Marsala wine and topped with caramelized onions, and the filet mignon in a rich, creamy Cognac sauce. (The word “creamy” applies to just about any sauce here, so beware.) The Oar House looks like a cross between a Texan’s idea of an Italian villa and a boat house, but the brick walls and wood-plank floors make for an attractive, romantic space. A sign on the door demands “smart casual” dress, and a manager gave us the once-over when we walked in with jeans, but we ended up sitting near a guy in a Hawaiian shirt and denim shorts. So whatever. On our visit, service was friendly but slow.

Loosely steeped in the cuisines of Lombardi, Tuscany and Veneto, Isabella’s (and its lounge, Isa) does a worthy job of straddling Italian culinary authenticity with Frisco suburbia fright points (No fresh anchovies here—yet). Respectable risotto shares space with a wonderful sea bass laced with olive pâté, a tasty Tuscan tenderloin in Chianti reduction and a wonderfully conceived tuna tartare draped in herbed chickpea puree that only fails because the tuna is a couple of notches off top-grade. Isabella is a real (Italian!) lady, and the owners (Craig Vaught and Kenyon Price) personify the restaurant with her essence referring to “her doors” and how “she blends” regional culinary influences, as if she were an oil tanker or a destroyer. Let’s hope she doesn’t sink.

i Fratelli (meaning "the Brothers" in Italian) became a reality in 1987 in Irving, Texas. The Cole Brothers had dreamed of teaming up to produce a concept where quality authentic Italian dishes, could be served in a warm relaxed setting but with well-mannered professional service and all for an affordable price.
