With a no-nonsense yet varied menu, plus servings hefty enough to satisfy the Godfather, Sal's Pizza makes for practical, wallet-pleasing Italian. A giant-sized pizza with three toppings--almost big enough to cover a round-topped table for two--only costs about 16 bucks. Although a little greasy, the thick, crisp crust makes for adequate day two and three breakfast fare--cold or hot, your choice. The garlic bread is great, if you don't mind tons of butter. A variety of hero sandwiches for lunch and the option of sprinkling pizza, pasta, veal, chicken and seafood dishes with oregano, along with the standard crushed red pepper and Parmesan, sets Sal's apart from other thrifty Italian joints.

Riccardi’s is a surprise in Dallas, a place where Italian not only lives, it doggone thrives. It not only serves distinctive cuisine from owner Gaetano Riccardi’s hometown of Avellino (near Naples), it bottles three of its own wines from the province of Avellino: a Greco di Tufo (white), the oldest variety of Avellino, the nutty and fruit forward Fiano di Avelliono (white), and the rich and earthy Riccardi Taurasi, a red wine made from the Aglianico grape that is flush with food friendly sharpness that unravels layers of balanced complexity.

Penne Pomodoro is a simple Park Cities Italian bistro by Dallas restaurateur Alberto Lombardi (Lombardi Mare, Lombardi's 311). The fare is unassumingly tasty (the kitchen does amazing things with calamari and artichokes), and the digs are bright, open, fresh and comfortable in shades of wax bean yellow.
