Cajun and Creole

This Hibachi grill sushi restaurant is heavy on Elvis (there's a King swivel hip clock in the sushi bar) and other rock rambunctiousness. Though the food isn't stellar, it is very good (Cajun volcano roll is a zesty power chord), and the staff is as affable and considerate as the best in the city. Raw rock fun.

At Razzoo's our food is mouth-watering good. People have been making us a regular stop for years 'cause they get a big pile o' food for reasonable amount of money. Some of our menu choices are hard to say 'cause they're Frenchy (Etoufee, Meuniere Sauce, Chicken Tchoupitoulas) and some just sound weird (Gator Tail, Crawdaddys, Rat Toes). Just take a chance...it wouldn't be on the menu if people didn't keep ordering it. If you can't pronounce it, just point.

When Pappadeaux opened in Duncanville, it instantly became The Place to Eat in Southern Dallas. If you want to see a snapshot of Dallas County’s exploding black middle class, show up for lunch on Sunday when the church crowd arrives and cheerfully waits for 30 minutes or more to dine on Pappadeaux’s ample plates of perfectly fresh shrimp, catfish and other seafood specialties. Everybody leaves happy. The seafood is rightly renowned in the Dallas area, but Pappadeaux also prepares at tableside the best Greek salad in these parts and offers outstanding desserts, such as the bread pudding and crème brulee with fresh berries. This outlet has the usual cheerful, professional and efficient service.

Spelled simply, Cajun is an exquisite teetering act between spicy ferocity and the freshest raw materials. Nate’s executes this balance with the effectiveness of a sturdy swamp cooler. The kitchen sweats smoky spice fog that hovers and haunts the spaces between the beer signs as it bubbles massive portions of unrivaled richness. You'll find big slices of buttered and heavily garlicked French bread, and deep and dirty yet exquisitely balanced seafood gumbo with clean spices discernible through grains of fluffy white rice. Fresh fish, grilled or blackened, brims with savor and is perfect in texture. Spread some live blues or jazz on that (they do), and you have a recipe for perfect moments.

Situated in Dallas’ Design District, Kay Agnew’s restaurant is a mixture of style and substance. A massive print of blossoming red roses adorns one wall, while long stemmed roses center each table. The daily lunch menu at Margaux’s has a distinct Cajun/Creole flair, but each private event is a creative adventure into every menu style. A reasonable wine list and extensive bar add to its success as a private venue for both casual and fine dining.

Mac's has a wide array of choices in steaks, seafood, Cajun- and Italian-inspired dishes. It aspires to be something more than an Outback Steakhouse, with its wood paneling and quasi-clubby feel, but the quality and clientele are comparable. Try the teriyaki beef kebob and Salmon en Papillote, which was moist and flaky.
